David Thompson is one of the founding members of the law firm. He maintains an active and diverse civil litigation practice in state and federal courts, and has an administrative agency advocacy practice. His work includes business and commercial litigation, civil rights litigation, and land-use, real estate title, and estate litigation. He has an abiding interest in property rights matters. He has regularly defended doctors, hospitals, newspapers and newspaper reporters, and public officials in professional liability, public official liability, and defamation claims, and has represented individuals and insurance companies in automobile tort cases.
On the transactional side, David handles Eastern Shore real estate conveyances and land title analyses. He regularly deals with real estate issues, both transactionally and in the litigation context. For most of his career, David has served towns and counties as their designated municipal attorney. He is a trained mediator, and accepts private mediation assignments in complex matters.
David was born in St. Mary’s County Maryland, and attended college in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the College of William and Mary, where he also attended law school. He was an editor of the Law Review, and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1974. He practiced initially in Virginia, where he is still a member of the bar, and has practiced law in Easton, Maryland, since 1978. David served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves, and was an elected prosecutor in Virginia before returning to Maryland. David is admitted to practice in Virginia, Maryland, the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has argued, briefed, and won more than 40 appellate cases in state and federal courts. He has been regularly named in the Best Lawyers of America lists, and is ranked “AV-Preeminent” by his peers in the Martindale-Hubbell ratings.
David and his wife Jane, a teacher for more than 40 years, reside primarily in Talbot County, Maryland, and also in Denver, Colorado for portions of the year. They have two children and four grandchildren. An avid soccer fan, David continues to instruct youth soccer players, and has served as President of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association. He enjoys the EPL, fishing, hiking, and distance running.

Robert Merriken is a shareholder who has been practicing law with the firm since 1988. Bob’s primary practice areas include general and commercial civil litigation, personal injury, real estate matters, and representation of clients in small business matters and transactional work. The firm currently represents a number of local governments and Bob is currently the lead Town Attorney for the Town of Hurlock.
Bob was born in Annapolis and attended St. Michaels High School. Following high school, Bob served in the United States Coast Guard for four years and the United States Coast Guard Reserve for another eleven years. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Salisbury State College, magna cum laude, in 1984 and his J.D. in 1988 from the University of Maryland School of Law.
Bob is a member of the Maryland Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He is a member of the Talbot County Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, and a past member of the Caroline County Bar Association. Bob has served in the past as a Trustee to the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers, Inc.
Bob and his wife live in Oaklands, a community located just outside of Easton, where Bob has been the President of Oaklands Association, Inc. since 2008. Bob and his wife have one daughter currently attending college. In Bob’s spare time, he enjoys working out at the Easton YMCA as well as hunting, fishing, boating, and recreational vehicle camping with friends and family.
